Constructive destruction…

We all have a picture of building demolition in our minds – noisy, dusty, dangerous work using lots of machinery and trucks with large amounts of unusable debris going to landfill somewhere – and the whole process looking pretty expensive.

This could not be further from the truth :

Not only is demolition often one of the least expensive parts of construction, it can be surprisingly sustainable – the UK demolition industry regularly achieves a recycling rate of 96% or higher.

Recycling can also be more diverse and innovative than merely smelting and crushing back-to-raw for re-fabrication. Materials like doors, windows and fixtures can be salvaged and reused “as is” in future construction projects, donated to local charities or non-profits for reuse or simply re-purposed for other uses such as making furniture and artistic installations.

Given the above, a sizeable downstream economy exists in the UK to process demolition debris : major market players include Aggregate Industries, Tarmac, CEMEX, Hanson, Breedon Group, and Lafarge…amongst others.

Vreeslik news snippet feed streams track all things demolition-wise for downstream processors in the UK :
