Black swans for profit…
The first European sighting of black swans occurred in 1697 when Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh’s expedition explored the Swan River in Western Australia.
Up to that point, at least to traditional Western knowledge, black swans did not exist. For centuries European school children were taught that swans were exclusively white, with even the collective noun for a group of swans being – a “whiting”.
The surprise emergence of something that is rare and discovery of its instance changes things in a big way, eventually led to the “black swan theory” – thanks to Professor Nassim Nicholas Taleb, from New York University, in 2007. First, an event or occurrence lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past convincingly points to its possibility. Second, it carries a substantial “impact” inside its enclosed “system”.
There is a way in which we can amalgamate black swan theory with news streams to profit local business :
If we view town-, county- or even country-wide business environments as our “enclosed systems” and “black swans” as business-related news snippets – in this case specifically defined as unexpected but with large impact for profit – we not only have a very powerful conceptual SME business tool, but a practical one too…thanks to Vreeslik.
